Peace in the Pause

Have you ever felt overwhelmed before you even started your day?

This week, I stood in my lavender field looking at ten more rows that needed to be pruned. Each row would take hours, and Labor Day was quickly approaching. Instead of seeing the task in front of me, I could only see everything that remained.

Then the Lord gently changed my perspective.

Somewhere between pruning lavender, stretching my back, taking a drink of water, and watching a butterfly drift through the field, He reminded me that there is peace in the pause.

A Lesson from the Lavender Field

At first, all I could think about was finishing the job. However, I soon realized I had a choice. I could keep counting rows, or I could start counting moments.

So I slowed down.

I pruned a few plants. Then I swept the clippings. Next, I stretched, took a sip of water, and looked around.

As I paused, I noticed the birds singing. I heard the crickets. I watched a butterfly flutter through the lavender.

Even the interruptions became invitations. A dead battery and an unexpected text message reminded me to stop, breathe, and notice that God had been with me all along.

The Hidden Work Matters

One thought stayed with me all afternoon.

The world celebrates the blossoms. God sees the pruning.

Visitors will admire the lavender next spring. They’ll enjoy the fragrance and gather beautiful bouquets. However, few people will ever think about the hours spent pruning in the heat of August.

Without the pruning, though, there would be no healthy blooms.

Isn’t that true in our own lives?

Much of what God does in us happens through hidden, ordinary faithfulness.

The quiet prayers.

Choosing forgiveness.

Showing kindness.

Serving others.

Doing our work with excellence.

Remaining faithful when no one notices.

God sees every one of those moments.
