Feeling Out of Place in a New Season?

Have you ever walked into a room and felt like the new kid at school—even as an adult?

Finding belonging in a new season can be difficult. Everything feels unfamiliar, and you may wonder where you fit.

In Episode 75 of Rooted & Rested, The New Girl at 57: When You Don’t Know Where You Belong, I’m sharing a personal story about faith, change, and trusting God.

After nine years of Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) leadership, I stepped away with peace. But starting over in a new class was harder than I expected.

I missed the familiar faces, friendships, and feeling of belonging.

Trusting God’s Purpose During Life Changes

Sometimes God leads us into places we wouldn’t choose for ourselves.

I began attending a different BSF class so my granddaughters could participate. Seeing them enjoy Bible study brings me joy!

But being the new girl at 57? Well, that’s been an adjustment!

Although I don’t know everyone yet, I trust that God has a reason for placing me there.

I’m learning that an unfamiliar season can still have purpose.

Finding Belonging Through Meaningful Connections

One thing I’ve always loved is hearing people’s stories.

As I look around my new discussion group, I see women who have lived through decades of experiences.

What challenges have they faced? How has God answered their prayers? What wisdom have they gained?

I hope to encourage them by listening. But I also want to receive the wisdom they’ve gained through years of walking with God.

Then something unexpected happened.

One Wednesday, I almost stayed home because I had so much to do. But I sensed the Holy Spirit prompting me to go.

That morning, I made meaningful connections, heard a woman’s personal story, and reconnected with familiar faces.

For the first time, I began feeling like I belonged.

And to think, I almost missed it!

Biblical Encouragement for Finding Belonging

God’s Word reminds us that every person has a place and a purpose.

In 1 Corinthians 12:18, Paul explains that God places each member in the body as He determines.

Psalm 71:18 reminds us of the importance of sharing God’s faithfulness with the next generation.

And Proverbs 3:5–6 encourages us to trust the Lord instead of relying on our own understanding.

These verses remind me that I don’t need all the answers. I can trust God even when I don’t understand His plans.

Learning to Receive in a New Season

This year, one of the words I’ve been holding close is RECEIVE.

For years, I served in a role where I focused on helping others feel welcomed and remembered.

Now I’m learning that I have something to receive, too.

Sometimes that means listening to someone else’s story. Other times, it means accepting encouragement or simply showing up.

And sometimes God uses an unexpected conversation to remind us that we’re exactly where we need to be.

Encouragement for Your Season of Life

Are you navigating a life transition or wondering where you belong?

Maybe you’ve retired, changed churches, moved, or stepped away from a familiar responsibility.

Remember, your life still has purpose.

God hasn’t forgotten you, and the lessons He’s taught you haven’t been wasted.

Sometimes God places us somewhere unfamiliar, not just for what we can give, but for what we have yet to receive.

Finding Belonging in a New Season Through Faith

Finding belonging in a new season doesn’t always happen overnight. Sometimes it takes patience, a willingness to step outside our comfort zones, and trust in God’s timing.

One thing I’m discovering is that I don’t have to figure everything out right away. I can miss the friendships and familiarity of my previous season while still being grateful for where God has placed me today.

I’m also learning that belonging isn’t necessarily about having a title, a responsibility, or a particular role. Sometimes it’s simply about being present and allowing relationships to develop naturally.

And perhaps one of the greatest gifts of a new season is discovering how much we can learn from others.

Every woman has a story. Every generation has wisdom to share. And every conversation can become an opportunity to encourage someone or receive encouragement ourselves.

I’m trusting that God has more to teach me in this season, and I’m looking forward to discovering what that might be.
