When the Work Feels Heavy
Last week on Rooted & Rested, I shared about finding peace in the pause. This week, I’m discovering why I needed that reminder so much.
August on the lavender farm means reshaping plants before fall, and this year the work feels especially heavy. I wasn’t able to do my usual spring shaping, so there’s more work to be done now. Add in unusually hot and humid weather, mowing twice a week, rain in the forecast, and crabgrass that seems determined to take over the farm, and I’ll admit it—I’m tired.
And it isn’t only the lavender.
There are things I’m excited to finish before fall, including preparing our greenhouse for families and getting our new Salt & Light Story Sessions ready. I want to meet those deadlines, and I’m doing everything I can to make that happen.
But as I’ve worked my way down the lavender rows, I’ve been thinking about the difference between carrying the work and carrying the weight.
The work may be ours to faithfully do.
But the weight of making everything turn out exactly according to our plans? That was never ours to carry alone.

Scripture
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Jesus doesn’t tell us to come when the list is finished, the problems are solved, or we’ve finally gotten ourselves together.
He simply says, Come.
That’s the invitation I’m holding onto in this season.
Tomorrow, the lavender rows will still be there. The rain may still come. My list will probably still be longer than I’d like.
But God’s faithfulness will still meet me there too.
And for today, that’s enough to take the next faithful step.
